When Are You Exposed to BPA?

One of the issues I wonder about and remain somewhat unclear on is when I am exposed to bisphenol-A (BPA) and when I am not.  We learned some years ago (2008) that the polycarbonate sports bottles many of us were drinking water from contained bpa and that bpa affects men and juveniles in undesirable ways.

I ran across this article on bpa in Men’s Health Magazine just today and wanted to share it with you. Here’s an excerpt:

“You’ve probably heard about the links between the amount of bisphenol-A (BPA) people consume and higher rates of heart disease, diabetes, and male infertility. As a result of all the press, many companies have switched to BPA-free formulas. Then again, some haven’t—making it all the more confusing to figure out what’s OK and what to avoid. Here’s where you’re most likely to find BPA today and how to steer clear.”  Continue reading

Remove Fluoride from Drinking Water

I am often asked what I think about fluoride in drinking water.  Water fluoridation remains extremely controversial.  I notice that my customers are either strongly supportive of the practice or strongly opposed. I generally don’t take a position but rather, in service to my clients, I can provide a water purification system that will remove fluoride or a water filter that will reduce fluoride or leave it in your water.   This is only one of the many reasons that I must speak with a client before recommending a water purifier for any particular individual.

In January 2001 the EPA revised its fluoride standard, lowering the recommended level. Here is an excerpt from EPA’s press release: Continue reading

Arsenic in drinking water increases risk of heart disease

I wanted to share this news with you about the relationship between arsenic and heart disease:

ARAIHAZAR, Bangladesh — A new study indicates that even moderate levels of arsenic in drinking water increases the risk of heart disease, according to US News and World Report. Researchers studied nearly 12,000 men and women in Araihazar, Bangladesh, where arsenic contamination is widespread, the article stated. The researchers measured arsenic levels in wells used for drinking water by the participants, who also gave periodic urine samples that were tested for arsenic. Nearly 30 percent of the deaths among the study participants can be attributed, in part, to moderate levels of arsenic in drinking water, according to the researchers.

The study was published online in the British Medical Journal.

Pesticide Exposure Linked to Lymphoma and Breast Cancer

About 1.2 billion pounds of pesticides will be applied to U.S. soil this year.  With the arrival of warm weather comes the need to control weeds and insects and the temptation to use pesticides.  Or, for those of us who live around farms our water source may contain pesticides regardless of our own actions.

Pesticides have been linked to a variety of cancers.  The Midwest corn belt is referred to by physicians as the ‘lymphoma belt’.  Apparently children conceived  during the May to July period are affected due to their exposure to pesticides either directly or in water. Continue reading

Shall I buy a whole house water filter or a kitchen water filter?

Shall I buy a whole house water filter or a kitchen water filter. Once you’ve decided to purchase a filter to improve your water one decision you’ll be faced with is your choice of buying a whole house water filter or a kitchen water filter.   In this case I’m using the term water filter to describe a simple set of filters intended to remove chlorine, chloramine, and a few metals such as fluoride.  A water purifier adds the component of reverse osmosis treatment to also remove a wide range of metals, nitrates, and dissolved solids (tds).  While budget will be an important factor you should also be aware of the limitations and effectiveness of each type of water filtration system. Continue reading

Does Reverse Osmosis affect pH?

pH is a measure of the acidity of water. We humans drink a variety of different beverages with varying pH ranges, from highly acidic orange and apple juice (3.3 pH), to mildly acidic milk and coffee (6 pH). Liquids that have a 7.0 pH are considered neutral and anything above that is alkaline.

Water can be acidic or alkaline, depending on the source.  In my view the ideal drinking water is a pH of about 7.4. Continue reading

Removing radioisotopes and fallout from drinking water

As radioactive fallout drifts into California and across the U.S., you may want to be concerned with removing radioisotopes from your drinking water. You may be wondering how the Japanese Nuclear Emergency is affecting your drinking water. This article discusses the isotopes that may be present in your water and how to remove them.

And more importantly … what can you do to protect yourself.

So far, the following elements have shown up in rain and drinking water supplies in some places across the U.S.: Continue reading

Minerals in Water – How Important Are They?

There’s an authentic debate among wellness professionals about the type of water that is healthiest to drink. Some advocate water that has naturally occurring minerals. Others suggest drinking low temperature distilled water.  The unique aspects of your water will determine the type of water filtration you need. Physical characteristics and contamination present in drinking water vary widely. This article will help you weigh the importance of minerals in your water, in contrast to the information contained in your local water quality report.

The issue of minerals in water is complex.  The scientific principle of osmosis is that water will move from an area of lower (solute) concentration to an area of higher (solute) concentration.1  In other words, water that is void of minerals is more hydrating because it will more readily cross the cell membranes in your body.2

You may have heard that distilled water and water produced by reverse osmosis are ‘dead,’ due to the intensity of the processing and the lack of minerals.  However, measuring the energy of reverse osmosis water disputes this argument.3 The notion of ‘dead’ water is a misnomer that you should disregard.  Continue reading

Removing radioisotopes from drinking water

There is currently a great deal of concern about the radioactive fallout from the failed nuclear reactors in Japan.  Iodine 131 has shown up in trace amounts in some public water systems in the U.S.  While public health officials are assuring us that these levels are safe I’m sure there are individuals who would like to remove these from their drinking water.

There are an incredible number of posts on this topic on the web right now and they suggest a variety of solutions.  The use of a reverse osmosis drinking water system is the way to be certain you’ve removed these from your water. Continue reading

Do Saltless Water Softeners Work?

Hardness consists of calcium carbonate and magnesium hydroxide.  Conventional water softeners remove these. They accomplish this using a resin. The resin has an electrical charge that attracts the calcium and magnesium  That resin is replenished using a salt rinse. The rinse flushes the hardness down the drain and replaces them with sodium on the surface of the resin.

Conventional water softeners work. They remove hardness.

Saltless conditioners work differently. They use another type of media. This media works by ‘capping’ the electrical charge on calcium and magnesium ions. This is said to make them less able to stick together or to surfaces and build up on appliances. When using salt free conditioners one thing to note is that the calcium and magnesium are still in the water.
