The Worst Drinking Water in America
Here’s an article in Daily Finance that identifies cities in the U.S. with the worst drinking water, as rated by 24/7 Wall Street using data collected by the Environmental Working Group. http://www.dailyfinance.com/2011/01/31/ten-american-cities-with-worst-drinking-water/ There were a couple of interesting listings including … Continue reading
The Health Effects of Chloramine…and how to remove it
When chlorine is added to water it interacts with organic material to form a variety of cancer causing byproducts. Up to 17% of bladder cancers in the US are thought to be caused by these carcinogens, also known as disingection … Continue reading
Your septic system may be the cause of nitrates in your well water
Your septic system may be the cause of nitrates in your well water. Nitrates are one of the most dangerous carcinogens in drinking water, but not as dangerous as lead or arsenic. EPA allows up to 10 parts per million … Continue reading
Toxic lead in surprising places
As most of you know if you follow my blog or receive my emails I read Men’s Health Magazine. The February 2013 issue contains an interesting article about lead and Proposition 65 in California. Prop 65 requires the labeling of … Continue reading
Whole House or Kitchen Filter for Arsenic Removal
Arsenic is a naturally occurring metal with toxic properties. I’ve written about arsenic poisoning elsewhere in this blog. In 2006 the maximum amount of arsenic allowed in public water supplies was lowered from 50 parts per billion (ppb) to 10 ppb. There are two types of systems that can be used to remove arsenic. Continue reading
Colonies of bacteria in your house…in your water bottle…in your water filter
Bacteria’s ability to reproduce is one reason I advise private well owners that treating their well using chlorine or even hydrogen peroxide is only a temporary solution. One must kill every individual bacteria, which is highly unlikely, or the colony will reestablish itself. If you install the UV light at the same time you disinfect the well then you have provided a more long term solution to the problem of bacterial contamination of well water. Most bacteria are harmless to humans. Still…that is not always the case. Even though bacteria are everywhere and most are harmless to humans it’s a good idea to take small precautions such as these to keep them in check. Continue reading
One More Negative Health Effect of Drinking Chlorinated Water: Food Allergies
drinking chlorine and its byproducts or pesticides will kill the beneficial bacteria . Bacteria in the digestive tract aid in digesting food. It stands to reason then that if they are harmed by drinking pesticides or chlorinated water then your body will be less efficient at digestion. This is just one more indictment of the dangers of chlorinated water. While chlorine is an important tool in the disinfection of water to eliminate disease, it is beneficial to consumers to remove the chlorine from water at your home. It can be removed using a simple point of use device like my awesome Kitchen Defender water filter.
Lead May Be In The Water of Homes Built Before 1989
This week the City of Denver advised residents of potentially harmful levels of lead in their drinking water. Lead can come from two sources: it may occur naturally in the land that serves as the source of the water supply or it may be in old pipes and lead solder. Homes built before 1920 may have lead pipes and homes built before 1989 may use lead solder. To remove lead from drinking water I use my Kitchen Defender water filter. To remove lead from the entire home I use my Urban Defender whole house water filter. Continue reading
Symptoms of Arsenic Poisoning and Removal of Arsenic from Water
Arsenic poisoning is more common than we think. It can occur as a result of drinking water containing arsenic at levels far below the EPA standard. If you’d like to know if there is arsenic in your water you can find out by reviewing your local water report. If you have a private well you’ll have to pay for a water test. Symptoms of arsenic poisoning include changes in the skin such as brown spots on your body or warts or lesions on your chest. Symptoms of arsenic poisoning can also include hair loss, tingling in your extremities, loss of mental acuity, and nausea. Arsenic removal from drinking water can be assured through the use of a custom reverse osmosis system that oxidizes the arsenic before it reaches the RO membrane. Whole house arsenic removal systems are also available, though quite expensive.
