The Health Effects of Chloramine…and how to remove it
When chlorine is added to water it interacts with organic material to form a variety of cancer causing byproducts. Up to 17% of bladder cancers in the US are thought to be caused by these carcinogens, also known as disingection … Continue reading
Your septic system may be the cause of nitrates in your well water
Your septic system may be the cause of nitrates in your well water. Nitrates are one of the most dangerous carcinogens in drinking water, but not as dangerous as lead or arsenic. EPA allows up to 10 parts per million … Continue reading
Toxic lead in surprising places
As most of you know if you follow my blog or receive my emails I read Men’s Health Magazine. The February 2013 issue contains an interesting article about lead and Proposition 65 in California. Prop 65 requires the labeling of … Continue reading
Did Fukushima Affect Newborns in the United States?
We talked about Fukishima as the radiation was spreading across the U.S. on the trade winds. Traces of the fallout were found in U.S. water supplies on both East and West Coasts. If I recall correctly EPA told us that the levels were safe. Turns out that may not be true. In recent news is word that babies born on the West Coast during the months of April and May 2011 are 28% more likely to suffer from congenital hypothyroidism. Continue reading

The Bitter Side of Sugar and How Drinking Water Can Help
Most people nowadays do not reach for water when they are thirsty. Many of us reach for soft drinks, fruit juices, and other sugar-laden beverages that are not keeping our body healthy, and shockingly, not quenching our thirst. According to the USDA, on average, Americans are consuming 130 pounds of sugar per year. Stop drinking soft drinks and other sugary beverages. What do you drink instead? Simple. Water. Continue reading
What is the difference between a shower filter and a whole house water filter ?
There are misconceptions about what shower filters do. a shower filter removes a high level of chlorine, as much as 90%. What shower filters do not do is remove chlorine by-products. These groups of compounds have been determined to be linked to cancer and are regulated as a result by EPA. Shower filters also do not remove chloramines. Whole house water filters remove chlorine, chlorine byproducts, and their carcinogenic byproducts as well as other volatile organic compounds like pesticides. Continue reading
Whole House or Kitchen Filter for Arsenic Removal
Arsenic is a naturally occurring metal with toxic properties. I’ve written about arsenic poisoning elsewhere in this blog. In 2006 the maximum amount of arsenic allowed in public water supplies was lowered from 50 parts per billion (ppb) to 10 ppb. There are two types of systems that can be used to remove arsenic. Continue reading
It is the things we do every day that make us healthy or kill us in the end…
it is the small things that we do consistently that keep us healthy or kill us in the end. Whether you filter out that tiny bit of uranium or fluoride in your water or drink it every day. That matters to your health as these low levels of contaminants accumulate in your body over the years. Drinking appropriately filtered water and eating whole organic foods are keys to long term health. I think there’s something to that point: consistency. Eat healthy almost all the time and it’s ok to break loose now and then. Continue reading
