The Bitter Side of Sugar and How Drinking Water Can Help

Our bodies are comprised of about 60% water, our brains 70%, our blood 83%, and our lungs 90%. Are you seeing the underlying theme? We need water to survive. We need it to transport nutrients, digest our food, control body temperature, and flush out toxins. Each day, through food and drink, we must replace 85 oz (2.4 liters) of our body’s water supply.

Most people nowadays do not reach for water when they are thirsty. Many of us reach for soft drinks, fruit juices, and other sugar-laden beverages that are not keeping our body healthy, and shockingly, not quenching our thirst. “You mean to say that drinking soda does not quench my thirst? How is that possible?” Nope. It is actually quite the opposite. Here’s why: Continue reading

PUR filter removes 99% of cysts – so what?

cryptosporidium - a cyst found in surface waters

cryptosporidium – a cyst found in surface waters

Last night I was watching TV and a PUR water filter ad came on. They showed one of those shiny little faucet mount filters and made the claim: “99% of lead and cysts removed”.

Well, I don’t know about you but I’m not concerned with either cysts, like cryptosporidium, being in my water. It’s possible, but very unlikely. Some years ago Milwaukee had a cryptosporidium outbreak and a number of people throughout the city got very sick. Someone may even have died. I don’t recall. But this is generally not a problem with city water. Cities poison the water with chlorine specifically to kill any living organisms in the water. It is a problem when you’re out hiking in the woods. And PUR is my filter of choice when I’m camping and drinking river water. Continue reading

What is the difference between a shower filter and a whole house water filter ?

What is the difference between a shower filter and a whole house filter? There are misconceptions about what shower filters do. Shower filters employ KDF media that converts the chlorine molecule (Cl2) to chloride ions (CL-). Chlorine is a poisonous gas or liquid, considered one of the most toxic on earth, while chloride is harmless at low levels (high levels of anything can be a problem). So a shower filter removes a high level of chlorine, as much as 90%.

Shower filters do not remove the carcinogenc byproducts of chlorine in your shower water. Continue reading

Whole House or Kitchen Filter for Arsenic Removal

Arsenic is a naturally occurring metal with toxic properties. I’ve written about arsenic poisoning elsewhere in this blog. In 2006 the maximum amount of arsenic allowed in public water supplies was lowered from 50 parts per billion (ppb) to 10 ppb. Yet I have spoken with people who exhibit signs of arsenic poisoning at levels below 10 ppb. And people with private wells may be drinking this amount or more without knowing it.

There are two types of systems that can be used to remove arsenic. Continue reading

It is the things we do every day that make us healthy or kill us in the end…

I’m just back after a truly amazing road trip. Travels with my son took me from Utah through Nevada on snow covered highways at temperatures of 5 degrees, then on through Oregon’s eastern mountains, through Walla Walla (I could smell the onions in the air) and into Seattle.

Seattle has become a truly metropolitan hip city. We took a ferry to San Juan Island and searched for whales by boat. I had forgotten what truly majestic scenes of open sea, snow covered volcanoes, and low cloud cover provide. Beautiful. Continue reading

Colonies of bacteria in your house…in your water bottle…in your water filter

I read today that 99% of bacteria live in colonies and attach to surfaces as biofilms. If you carry a reusable water bottle you might open it and rub your finger along the inner surface. My bet is that you’ll feel a slick coating on the inside surface of the bottle. That is biofilm, a colony of bacteria.

80% of all infections in humans come from biofilms according to Veysel Berk at UC Berkeley in a study published in the July 2012 issue of Science. A single bacteria is able to attach to a surface, start reproducing, and launch a reproducing colony that becomes a biofilm.  Continue reading

One More Negative Health Effect of Drinking Chlorinated Water: Food Allergies

There is one more indictment of the negative health effects of drinking chlorinated water. A study released this week by the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology suggests a link between dichlorophenols and food allergies. Dichlorophenols are a chlorine byproduct.

The theory suggests that drinking chlorine and its byproducts or pesticides will kill the beneficial bacteria . Bacteria in the digestive tract aid in digesting food. It stands to reason then that if they are harmed by drinking pesticides or chlorinated water then your body will be less efficient at digestion. Continue reading

Dr. Oz Makes a Bad Call on Neti Pot Use

Neti pots have been in use since ancient times as a means to cleanse the sinuses. Recently Dr. Mehment Oz recommended the use of Neti Pots and what Dr. Oz recommends huge numbers of people act on. He’s very popular.

It turns out though that there’s a brain eating amoeba in some drinking water supplies that are harmless unless you put them up your nose. Naegleria fowleri is a deadly amoeba that rarely infects people. They are found primarily in the southern U.S. where they live in surface water that may be a source of drinking water. When they enter the human body through the nose they can cause a serious brain disease known as meningoencephalitis or PAM. Continue reading

How Often Should You Test Well Water?

Some well water testing companies suggest annual or twice yearly testing of well water. I think that’s a mistake. Rather, I would test your well water at the extremes of weather, meaning during wet times versus dry times, and before and after any major construction such as a new neighbor drilling a well or a nearby fracking operations. Continue reading
