It is the things we do every day that make us healthy or kill us in the end…
it is the small things that we do consistently that keep us healthy or kill us in the end. Whether you filter out that tiny bit of uranium or fluoride in your water or drink it every day. That matters to your health as these low levels of contaminants accumulate in your body over the years. Drinking appropriately filtered water and eating whole organic foods are keys to long term health. I think there’s something to that point: consistency. Eat healthy almost all the time and it’s ok to break loose now and then. Continue reading

Colonies of bacteria in your house…in your water bottle…in your water filter
Bacteria’s ability to reproduce is one reason I advise private well owners that treating their well using chlorine or even hydrogen peroxide is only a temporary solution. One must kill every individual bacteria, which is highly unlikely, or the colony will reestablish itself. If you install the UV light at the same time you disinfect the well then you have provided a more long term solution to the problem of bacterial contamination of well water. Most bacteria are harmless to humans. Still…that is not always the case. Even though bacteria are everywhere and most are harmless to humans it’s a good idea to take small precautions such as these to keep them in check. Continue reading
One More Negative Health Effect of Drinking Chlorinated Water: Food Allergies
drinking chlorine and its byproducts or pesticides will kill the beneficial bacteria . Bacteria in the digestive tract aid in digesting food. It stands to reason then that if they are harmed by drinking pesticides or chlorinated water then your body will be less efficient at digestion. This is just one more indictment of the dangers of chlorinated water. While chlorine is an important tool in the disinfection of water to eliminate disease, it is beneficial to consumers to remove the chlorine from water at your home. It can be removed using a simple point of use device like my awesome Kitchen Defender water filter.
Dr. Oz Makes a Bad Call on Neti Pot Use
Neti pots have been in use since ancient times as a means to cleanse the sinuses. Recently Dr. Mehment Oz recommended the use of Neti Pots and what Dr. Oz recommends huge numbers of people act on. It turns out though that there’s a brain eating amoeba in some drinking water supplies that are harmless unless you put them up your nose. You may become infected while swimming or drinking unfiltered spring water, though you have to somehow get the latter up your nose. Two people in Louisiana recently died. Using a Neti pot with infected water is suspected as the cause. To safely use your Neti pot, you should first kill any bacteria or amoebas that may be present in your water by first boiling that water unless you are using a kitchen water filter with UV light.

How Often Should You Test Well Water?
I would test well water at the extremes of weather, meaning during wet times versus dry times, and before and after any major construction such as a new neighbor drilling a well or a nearby fracking operations. In my experience well water can become much harder (meaning it contains more minerals) during times of drought. And water can become much fresher after periods of substantial rain. If there is farming near where you live you may wish to test for pesticides in well water. One problem with well water testing is that you may gain a false sense of confidence. Frequent testing at the points of extremes in weather or conditions will provide you with a sense of the range in water quality within your well. Continue reading

Lead May Be In The Water of Homes Built Before 1989
This week the City of Denver advised residents of potentially harmful levels of lead in their drinking water. Lead can come from two sources: it may occur naturally in the land that serves as the source of the water supply or it may be in old pipes and lead solder. Homes built before 1920 may have lead pipes and homes built before 1989 may use lead solder. To remove lead from drinking water I use my Kitchen Defender water filter. To remove lead from the entire home I use my Urban Defender whole house water filter. Continue reading
Is there Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA, in your drinking water?
A new discovery by scientists at the University of Maryland adds to the issues for people whose drinking water is supplied by rivers. Now scientists have discovered a resistant strain of Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA, at sewage treatment plants. Anyone living downstream of a city that discharges sewage into their water source should use reverse osmosis for drinking water. Continue reading

How Does Flooding Affect My Well Water?
With much of the East Coast under water due to super storm Sandy some people with private wells will have contaminated well water. If your well casing is covered by flood water then your well is likely contaminated. Do not drink your well water until you’ve used a well water test to determine if it is safe and what kind of well water filter you may need. Continue reading
Symptoms of Arsenic Poisoning and Removal of Arsenic from Water
Arsenic poisoning is more common than we think. It can occur as a result of drinking water containing arsenic at levels far below the EPA standard. If you’d like to know if there is arsenic in your water you can find out by reviewing your local water report. If you have a private well you’ll have to pay for a water test. Symptoms of arsenic poisoning include changes in the skin such as brown spots on your body or warts or lesions on your chest. Symptoms of arsenic poisoning can also include hair loss, tingling in your extremities, loss of mental acuity, and nausea. Arsenic removal from drinking water can be assured through the use of a custom reverse osmosis system that oxidizes the arsenic before it reaches the RO membrane. Whole house arsenic removal systems are also available, though quite expensive.
