Expect More Chlorine and Pesticides in Your Water
With the emergence of spring you can anticipate several issues with your drinking water. First, your city may flush their distribution pipes for an extended period of time. This can result in higher chlorine levels and changes in taste. The second thing to be on the lookout for is an increase in pesticides in your water as farmers take to the fields. Continue reading
What is the best home water purification system?
People often call me and ask for the very best home purification system, thinking that there is one whole house water filter system they can buy that will remove all contaminants. There isn’t. For most people this combination of whole house water filter and a kitchen water filter or kitchen reverse osmosis system will provide you with state of the art protection from the full array of contaminants in public water.
NSF Certification of Water Purification Systems Is Misleading the Public
Many of those who evaluate water filters, like Consumer Reports and Natural Resources Defense Council, recommend that you purchase an NSF certified filter. I wonder if these organizations actually know what the certification process involves. If they did, I think they’d be disappointed. The NSF 42 certification is pretty meaningless. It is the water industry’s way of taking care of their buddies in the industry while once again screwing the consumer. What’s sad is when environmental and consumer organizations actually fail to see this hidden deception. NSF certifications may have some value but what you want to find is the type of filter or type of media that removes the contaminants present in your water. Whatever you choose to purchase, research well and don’t fall for the hype…
Nitrates in Fresno’s Drinking Water
I have long been concerned about the level of nitrates in Fresno and the Salinas Valley drinking water supplies. Nitrates are dangerous at levels far below those allowed by EPA or the State of California. You can eliminate nitrates from drinking water using Sweetwater’s reverse osmosis drinking water filter. Continue reading
Fracking Can Contaminate Your Well Water
Yahoo News reports another case of potential private well water contamination by fracking for natural gas. Here’s what you can do about it. Continue reading
How Fluoride in Drinking Water Can Affect Your Thyroid
There is an increasing amount of disturbing evidence that one of the factors that could be causing the thyroid pandemic is the presence of fluoride in our drinking water. We are now finding out that fluoride inhibits iodine’s ability to bind with the thyroid gland. This means if we drink water with high amounts of fluoride, our thyroid is interrupted. The truth is: removing fluoride from water can be difficult and depends in part on local water chemistry. My recommendation therefore is: buy a water filter that will reduce or remove the amount of fluoride in your drinking water. Continue reading
A Backwashing Whole House Water Filter Is Better Than an Upflow Filter
This article is intended to clarify the difference between my Urban Defender, a backwashing whole house carbon filter system and those systems that do not backwash. The latter cost less but also deliver less. The backwash function on a whole house water filter cleans and redistributes the media bed on a consistent basis at a specified flow rate for the proper duration. The backwash also removes media fines to the drain. Proper back wash helps to provide consistent flow, increased contaminant removal and longer media life.
Nitrates In Drinking Water May Cause Cancer
Nitrates in drinking water may cause of cancer at levels below the EPA maximum contaminant level. US EPA has established a maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 10 parts per million (ppm) for nitrates in drinking water. For many contaminants I have my own tolerance standards. Nitrate is one of those.
Do Reverse Osmosis Systems Waste Water?
Does reverse osmosis waste water? People ask me this question every day. At issue is the fact that for every gallon of purified water produced by a reverse osmosis system some amount of water goes down the drain, carrying along with it the unwanted contaminants from the water source. Does a clothes washer waste water? Or does it accomplish a specific task? We humans are very subjective in our use of words. We think that water we don’t get to pee in or drink is wasted and yet when we use a reverse osmosis system we are using water to accomplish a goal just as we do when we shower or wash clothes.
Study Shows Pharmaceuticals Removed by Carbon Filters
new ground breaking research by the Arizona Laboratory for Emerging Contaminants shows that simple carbon filters do remove a percentage of the unregulated contaminants present in many drinking water systems. The focus of the study was on pharmaceuticals and ALEC tested the water to determine that pharmaceuticals known to be in the water had in fact been removed by the filters.
