How Important Are Minerals in Your Water?

Many people are under the impression that it is important to drink water containing natural minerals. The logic follows then, and it is a widespread belief, that it is bad to drink water that has been processed by reverse osmosis because it has been stripped of its mineral content. Both of these assumptions are generalizations that may lead you down the wrong path toward health. My conclusion is that while minerals in water might be nice, they are not the most important factor when considering how to treat your drinking water. The level of minerals (tds) and the presence of contaminants are the things to consider when determining whether a simple kitchen filter, a whole house water filter, or reverse osmosis is the appropriate water purification system for the water that’s coming out of your tap.

Expect More Chlorine and Pesticides in Your Water

With the emergence of spring you can anticipate several issues with your drinking water. First, your city may flush their distribution pipes for an extended period of time. This can result in higher chlorine levels and changes in taste. The second thing to be on the lookout for is an increase in pesticides in your water as farmers take to the fields. Continue reading

People often call me and ask for the very best home purification system, thinking that there is one whole house water filter system they can buy that will remove all contaminants. There isn’t. Do Reverse Osmosis Systems Waste Water?

Does reverse osmosis waste water? People ask me this question every day. At issue is the fact that for every gallon of purified water produced by a reverse osmosis system some amount of water goes down the drain, carrying along with it the unwanted contaminants from the water source. Does a clothes washer waste water? Or does it accomplish a specific task? We humans are very subjective in our use of words. We think that water we don’t get to pee in or drink is wasted and yet when we use a reverse osmosis system we are using water to accomplish a goal just as we do when we shower or wash clothes.

Study Shows Pharmaceuticals Removed by Carbon Filters

new ground breaking research by the Arizona Laboratory for Emerging Contaminants shows that simple carbon filters do remove a percentage of the unregulated contaminants present in many drinking water systems. How To Remove Chloramine From Drinking Water

Chloramine is a combination of chlorine and ammonia that is used by some cities to disinfect drinking water. The best way to remove chloramine is to use a combination of whole house water filter and a kitchen water filter. My Urban Defender whole house water filter will remove chloramine. However, when I recommend it to a customer with chloramine in their drinking water then I will also recommend a kitchen water filter. This is because I have found that enough chloramine can bypass a whole house filter that it can still be tasted when drinking water. Continue reading

Health Writer Nancy Deville Interviews James P McMahon About Water

‘Our bodies need hydration every day because water is the principal constituent of all body fluids, is essential for proper metabolic functioning, and is necessary to flush toxins. Do remineralizing filters really work?

Many companies suggest that because reverse osmosis systems remove the minerals from water that you should add a remineralizing filter afterwards for the purpose of restoring minerals to your water.

I’ve tested these filters and while the pH rose dramatically due to carbonates in the filter there were no minerals added. Continue reading
